Preserve our roots

Origins of Preserve Our Roots

Nigeria is a country blessed with diverse natural resources, including oil, gas, and fertile lands for agriculture. However, with the increasing global concern over climate change, Nigeria is also experiencing severe climate-related impacts, such as rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events.

As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident in Nigeria, it is crucial to take proactive steps to address this issue. One such step that we have made as an organization was to start the Nigerian climate change movement – “Preserve Our Roots”. Preserve Our Roots was started in the aims of raising awareness about the devastating effects of climate change and mobilizing individuals (especially youth) and communities to take action to mitigate its impact.

The Preserve Our Roots movement began as a body that organized smaller protests, and campaigns through social media activism, however, it thus grew into a formal organization as it began to lead educational programs, fundraisers and larger scale across nation campaigns.Through working with local communities, schools and organizations, as well as, bodies already active in environmental conservation and by engaging with communities and organizations, Preserve Our Roots has helped identify local challenges and develop tailored solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change. For instance, communities in coastal areas including: Lekki Phase 1 are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels. Through a campaign for proper urban area planning and government action, Preserve Our Roots called out the inefficient government action and, thus, worked with the local government to identify and implement ways to protect our homes and livelihoods from flooding.

Preserve Our Roots has also partnered with businesses, government agencies, and policymakers to promote policies and practices that support sustainable development. Our future work also involves advocating for renewable energy sources, promoting waste reduction and recycling, and encouraging sustainable agriculture practices.

In addition to these actions, the Nigerian climate change movement can also prioritize education and awareness-raising activities. By educating individuals and communities about the impact of climate change and ways to reduce their carbon footprint, the movement can create a culture of sustainability in Nigeria.

Finally, Preserve Our Rotos has also leveraged our social media platforms to amplify our message and reach a broader audience. By using hashtags, sharing images and videos, and engaging with followers, our movement has raised awareness about climate change and inspired people to take action. Climate change is a global challenge that requires a concerted effort from individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide. By starting a Nigerian climate change movement, Nigeria can take proactive steps to address this issue and safeguard its natural resources, economy, and people’s wellbeing
